Types of Molded Pulp
Thick Walled
Manufactured with a single mold. The wall thickness ranges from 3/16 to 3/8 inches.
Transfer Molded
Manufactured with one forming and one transfer mold. The wall thickness ranges from 1/8 to 3/16 inches.
Thermoformed (Thin-Walled)
Manufactured using multiple heated molds. The wall thickness ranges from 3/32 to 5/32 inches.
Processed
Manufactured with a secondary or special treatment process.
Critical Raw Materials in Moulded Pulp
Bagasse (Sugarcane) Pulp
Bagasse pulp is the fibrous residue remaining after the sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. It is widely used as a pulp molding material because it is low-cost and beneficial to the environment.
Bamboo Pulp
Fast Growing & Renewable Resource Bamboo pulp is derived from the bamboo plant, which grows very fast and is a renewable resource. Its solid and robust fibres are preferred in luxury garments for their strength and longevity—at the expense, of course, but only on occasional wear might you be justified against cosmetic sacrifice!
Wheat Straw Pulp
Wheat Straw Pulp is sourced from the stalks of harvested wheat using an agricultural by-product.
Reed Pulp
Reed pulp is processed from a reed plant. The quality of this raw material is relatively worse than that of other pulp, and it is used mainly in low-end products.
Palm Pulp
Palm fruit and leaves are the primary materials for extracting palm pulp. Due to its high oil content and complex processing, palm pulp is rare in pulp molding.
Wood Pulp
Soft to vital wood pulp is a flexible material that can be used in premium quality industrial applications.
Recycled Paper Materials
Recycled paper is the principal raw material for pulp molding, primarily carton pulp (used to make egg trays), newspaper pulp scrap, and A4 pulp.
Moulded Pulp Manufacturing Process
Moulded pulp is made by blending water with recycled paper or natural fibres. Together, these substances form a slurry which can be easily formed with custom tools that bind the fibres together into the desired shape. The next stage is pressing and drying.
Dry press involves taking the product directly to a heater or air drying it to remove moisture, then pressing it into shape.
Semi-wet press involves putting the product through a drier then through a hot press transfer moulding process – this helps achieve a smoother surface.
Wet press enables the smoothest and most refined finish, comparable to plastic. The product is taken through a thermoforming process during which it is dried and smoothed in a mould.
Any protruding edges are trimmed and recycled back into the pulp, along with any other waste materials.

Moulded fibre is commonly used to protect heavy electronics, automotive parts, and other items requiring strong shock absorption. Its rustic profile makes it ideal for edge protectors and other heavy-duty packaging solutions.
Moulded Fibre Egg Trays and Egg Cartons
It is frequently utilized in the production of egg trays and cartons due to its excellent cushioning properties. They also maintain structural integrity in humid conditions, ensuring eggs are well-protected during transport and storage.

Moulded fibre is also employed in the medical sector for packaging and protective applications, such as medical device casings and sterile packaging, where strength and impact resistance are crucial.
